Well, there’s a criminally underused feature sitting inside your Shopify admin right now that could flip that script—without the need for third-party apps or custom development.
It’s called Buy X Get Y, and it’s the game-changing BOGO tactic you’re probably ignoring.

If you’re like most Shopify merchants, you’ve probably lost sleep over one painful truth: “only a fraction of your customers ever come back.” You spend hundreds—sometimes thousands—on ads to convert first-time buyers… only to watch them vanish after checkout.
Sound familiar?
This is Shopify’s native BOGO (Buy One Get One) logic.
It allows you to create promotional rules like:
Best of all?
You can now do this natively — right inside Shopify’s Discounts dashboard.
Go to: Shopify Admin → Discounts → Create Discount → Buy X Get Y
No apps. No extra costs. No code.
Until recently, you couldn’t do true BOGO in Shopify without using third-party apps like Bold Discounts or Bundler. Even then, many apps introduced friction—slow load times, broken themes, and confusing cart logic.
Now that Shopify offers it natively, most merchants:
Here’s what makes Buy X Get Y insanely powerful:
1. It Creates “Justification to Buy Again”
BOGO logic gives your customer a reason to come back or increase their cart size:
“If I buy two now, I get the third for free—why wouldn’t I?”
2. It Feels Generous, Not Gimmicky
Unlike coupon codes or fake urgency tactics, this feels like a reward, not a trick.
3. It’s Customizable by Product or Collection
You can reward specific behavior:
Push slow-moving inventory
Incentivize purchases from a high-margin collection
Give loyalty-based gifts (e.g., buy 3 times, get a free item)
Let’s walk through the setup (no app needed):
Step 1: Go to Your Discounts Dashboard
In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts → Create Discount → Buy X Get Y
Choose Discount Code or Automatic (automatic works best for impulse-triggered upsells)
Step 2: Set Your Conditions
“Buy X”: Choose qualifying products, collections, or minimum quantities
“Get Y”: Choose what item(s) the customer will receive as a reward
Set the discount on Y: 100% off, 50% off, etc.
Optional: Limit to one use per customer or per order
Pro Tip:
Use the “Applies Once Per Order” setting to avoid giving away too much if someone buys in bulk.
Turn First-Time Buyers into Repeat Customers
Example:
Buy any item today, come back within 10 days and get 50% off your second order.
Set up with a time-sensitive BOGO discount + email reminder.
Increase AOV (Average Order Value)
Example:
Buy 2 candles, get 1 free.
Your customer was going to buy 1. Now they’re buying 3.
Offload Slow-Moving Inventory
Pair slow sellers as “Y” in your discount and move inventory without devaluing your best products.
One of our clients ran a Buy 2 Get 1 Free offer on their best-selling supplements. Prior to the campaign, only 15% of new customers returned. After 3 weeks of running a well-promoted BOGO with automatic discount and clear cart messaging:
No apps. No custom dev. Just the right strategy with the right tool.
For as low as $25, you can get our Buy X Get Y full package setup on Shopify. This will increase your revenue rate as well as customer retention rate.
Shopify’s Buy X Get Y isn’t just another sales mechanic.It’s a repeat-purchase engine, a brand-building tool, and a conversion amplifier—when used intentionally.
So if you’ve been frustrated with low repeat buyer rates, high ad costs, or stagnant AOV, this is the overlooked solution you’ve been searching for.
And the best part? You don’t need to spend another dollar to start using it. Just log in and set it up.
